![]() Be sure to clean your walls before getting started, so that the new paint goes on smoothly. Make sure you’ve laid out your drop cloths, placed painter’s tape along the baseboards, windows, outlets, and light switches, and opened your windows for good ventilation if you’re doing some interior painting. Like most home improvement projects, a little prep will go a long way when you’re painting walls. Read on to get the deets on eight DIY painting tips you can employ to avoid common problems, therefore preempting a paint-induced shame spiral next time you decide your bedroom needs a makeover. We want to change that! Behr Paint’s national trainer Jessica Barr offers painting tips on the most common errors novice painters make with their tools. It’s not your fault though! Unless you’re a professional painter, you aren’t schooled in painting techniques or painting tools. Even high-quality materials can’t save bad form. Specifically, you’re probably using your paint roller or brush wrong. Turns out, the frustration every time you attempt to paint a room has much more to do with incorrect technique than bad paint or weird walls. The better the brush, the less taping you’ll need to do, making the job go more quickly and with less frustration.Got a painting project on the radar? We’ve got just the painting tips to make sure the experience is as smooth as the fresh coat of paint you’re about to apply. It’s well worth investing in a high-quality cutting in paintbrush. This will result in drips and heavy lines on the walls, and you’ll risk getting the bristles of your brush caked with dried, crusty paint. Don’t load the brush with too much paint.Applying too much pressure on your strokes will cause the paint to ooze out of your brush and drip. If you have an accidental drip or get paint on the trim or baseboard, wrap a damp cloth around a spackling knife or the long edge of a 5-in-1 painter’s tool, then run it along your paint line to remove any excess.Ĭutting in does take practice, but taking the time to cut in neatly will make a huge difference in the appearance of your newly painted room. Doing so will ensure a smooth, seamless finish after you’ve rolled the walls.Ĭontinue to work your way around the room, gently overlapping sections to keep a wet edge. Once you’re satisfied that you have a cleanly painted edge or corner, again turn your paintbrush horizontal to the floor and ceiling, and gently sweep back over the area to erase brush marks and feather the outer boundaries of the painted area. This time, using long, even strokes, cut in a thinner line of paint that gets right up to the trim or wall corner. Now that you’ve used up some of the paint on your brush, turn your brush 90 degrees so that it angles into the wall, and go back to the beginning of your stroke. Holding the brush horizontal with respect to the floor and ceiling, paint a roughly 12-inch stripe on the wall, using a downward stroke if you’re painting at a corner, or a sideways stroke if you’re working along the ceiling, baseboard, or other trim. ![]() Now it’s time to get some paint on that wall! Begin about an inch away from the area you’re cutting in, whether you’re working along the trim or down a corner. Gently tap the brush against the side of the bucket to remove any excess. Dip the brush into the paint, but be careful not to load more than 2/3 the length of the bristles with paint. Hold your brush with a pencil grip, with the longer side of the brush bristles in line with your pointer finger. Pour about 2 inches of paint into the bucket. Otherwise, avoid taping-it takes extra time, and unless the tape is properly applied, paint can seep underneath it or dry on top of it, creating a real mess upon removal. Use painter’s tape to mask only those awkward or tough-to-reach spots where you know you won’t be able to guarantee clean results without taping. Always use a drop cloth, and move it as you work through the room. So, begin by prepping the room, making sure that floors and other surfaces are protected. Even when you’re dealing with the small amount of paint required for cutting in, drips and spills can happen.

![]() If your contact is using Do Not Disturb on a schedule – or, for that matter, if they’re using Do Not Disturb manually because of temporary circumstances – you may be able to get through if you call again at a different time. To set this up for yourself, tap the slider next to Scheduled and choose a From and To time for DND to switch on and turn off. (The latter approach may come across as manipulative if it turns out that they had blocked you.) Call at a different timeįinally, Do Not Disturb can be (and frequently is) scheduled to activate at certain times of day (most commonly during the night, so as to avoid being disturbed by texts and phone calls from night owls, wicket alerts from cricket matches on the other side of the world and so on). Or if you’re a somewhat close friend but a potentially closer mutual friend is with you, you could ask to borrow their phone or ask them to call for you. ![]() However, if you’re a close friend of the contact but happen to have been calling from a new or borrowed phone, it might be worth calling again from your usual number. Your friend is less likely to be using this feature because it’s deactivated by default and even if they are, if you’re not in the favoured group there’s not all that much you can do about it. The default setting is to ‘Allow Calls From… No One’, but by tapping this you can set it to allow calls from Everyone, or Favourites, or only members of a particular group in your contacts. You can also tailor your Do Not Disturb mode by telling it to let some people through but not others. We suppose you could feign ignorance and claim it was just coincidence that you called again so soon, but this is pretty shabby behaviour between friends. If they’ve got that default feature activated, you’ll break through the DND barrier.īut be aware that, if your friend is using Do Not Disturb and if your call is essentially trivial in nature, they may be ticked off that you’ve pretended to have an emergency. In other words, your first step if you suspect your friend is using Do Not Disturb should be to call again right away. To turn Silence Unknown Callers on, go to Settings > Phone, scroll to Silence Unknown Callers and make sure the slide is green.īy default, Do Not Disturb is set up to allow calls through if the same number calls again within three minutes – the idea is to ignore most calls but let through urgent ones. Perhaps you have a new phone and they don’t know your new number? With this in mind, consider whether the person you’re calling is likely to be running iOS 13 and whether they might not have your contact details. But generally if you aren’t in their Contacts then your call might not get through. Similarly, if the contact information is found in recent emails, Siri Suggestions could recognise this as a legitimate call. ![]() There are a few exceptions to this: if they recently made a call to the number calling the call will get through. Silence Unknown Callers is a feature of iOS 13 that means an iPhone will go straight to voicemail if the caller’s details aren’t in the iPhone owner’s Contacts app. The first is a feature of iOS 13 that may well mean you are receiving fewer calls. There are a few other possibilities that we will discuss below. It’s quite possible that the person you are calling hasn’t turned on Do Not Disturb. Emergency Credit: Banks applying for emergency credit must demonstrate proof that they cannot find a loan from another bank and requires a vote with the support of at least five members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. One of the most widely misunderstood and misapplied valuation techniques is the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) calculation for impairment testing.Their businesses are considered relatively risky, so the interest rates they pay are higher. Many are regional banks that serve the needs of the agriculture and tourism sectors. Third Tier: Called the seasonal credit program, this one serves smaller financial institutions which experience higher seasonal variations in their cash flows.Institutions in this tier are smaller and may not be as financially healthy as the ones that use the primary tier. It is usually set 50 basis points higher than the primary rate (one percentage point = 100 basis points). Second Tier: Called the secondary credit program, it offers similar loans to institutions that do not qualify for the primary rate. This primary credit discount rate is usually set above existing market interest rates which may be available from other banks or other sources of similar short-term debt. First Tier: Called the primary credit program, this tier provides capital to financially sound banks with good credit records. In light of many homeowners embracing bright color, wild wallpaper and layered looks, many pros are seeing a maximalist décor style take hold, specifically a perked-up traditional look that combines vintage pieces with lots of upbeat pattern and wall coverings. Houzz is seeing a lot of designers layer wood, rattan, stone, metal finishes, concrete and various textural fabrics in one room to create a dynamic style that’s full of visual and tactile interest. One phrase that has come up again and again in conversations with design professionals from the Houzz community is “layered texture” in décor, wallpaper, materials and accessories. Think delicate greige or off-white cabinets, light woods, muted tile, subdued patterns and warm bronze and brass finishes. They personally thanked the Wilson sisters later that night. Plant, Page and Jones, watching from the balcony, all got emotional as the song progressed. Backed on drums by Jason Bonham (John's son) and accompanied by a gospel choir, the Wilson sisters transfixed the crowd. Of the many cover versions of "Stairway," two in particular have earned praise from the members of Led Zeppelin: Dolly Parton's version on her 2002 album Halos and Horns, and a 2012 performance at the Kennedy Center by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart as part of a concert honoring Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. There are a lot of people who are making money there, and if that's the way they need to do it, then do it without my lyrics. I walked around, and I couldn't actually believe, I couldn't take people seriously who could come up with sketches like that. The first time I heard it was early in the morning when I was living at home, and I heard it on a news program. Robert Plant addressed the issue in an interview with Musician magazine: "'Stairway To Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music. In his books, Crowley advocated that his followers learn to read and speak backwards. This is rumored to contain backward satanic messages, as if Led Zeppelin sold their souls to the devil in exchange for "Stairway To Heaven." Supporting this theory is the fact that Jimmy Page bought Aleister Crowley's house in Scotland, known as Boleskine House. Bands would go there to get some privacy and focus on songwriting, as the biggest distractions were the sheep and other wildlife. Headley Grange may not be as enchanting as Bron-yr-Aur, but the place had some character: It was a huge, old, dusty mansion with no electricity but great acoustics. Plant corroborated the story in his testimony. ![]() Page told a different story under oath: When he was called to the stand in 2016 as part of a plagiarism trial over this song, he said that he wrote the music on his own and first played it for his bandmates at Headley Grange in Liphook Road, Headley, Hampshire, where they recorded it using a mobile studio owned by The Rolling Stones. Page sometimes told a story of the pair sitting by a fire at the cabin as they composed it, a tale that gives the song a mystical origin story, as there could have been spirits at play within those walls. Page and Plant explained that they started working on it at a 250-year-old Welsh cottage called Bron-yr-Aur, where they wrote the songs for Led Zeppelin III. In October 1970, after about 18 months of near constant touring, the song took shape. By April, he was telling journalists that their new song might be 15-minutes long, and described it as something that would "build towards a climax" with John Bonham's drums not coming in for some time. Jimmy Page would work on the song in an 8-track studio he had installed in his boathouse, trying out different sections on guitar. ![]() Led Zeppelin started planning "Stairway" in early 1970 when they decided to create a new, epic song to replace " Dazed And Confused" as the centerpiece of their concerts. That's a big maybe because the drill slows down a lot once it gets to 2/4 battery dots, letting the bits get jammed. This is a nice light-duty 3/8" drill but it won't get the job done with 2x4s and pilot-tipped (screw) spade and auger bits bigger than 5/8", though safer with 1/2" spade bits. It blew through the 2x4 in moments with both the spade and auger bits. I switched to my cheap corded Ryobi 3/8" drill, using the same pilot & auger bits, on the top plate. I'll never get the job done at this rate and will likely kill the otherwise Milwaukee nice drill. I made sure to go really slow and apply no pressure, stopping and backing out the moment the drill got stopped. I didn't even get through the first of 3 of the 2x4s (thick top plate) and the battery read 2 out of 4 battery dots. I applied zero pressure, only letting the weight of the drill do the pushing. Then, I tried the Milwaukee with a 3/4" pilot-tipped auger bit and the same thing happened. This light-duty drill wasn't up to the job to tackle drilling holes in 2x4s for electrical work. I've used dozens of drills in my life as a career engineer and also as a handyman. I backed off the moment the drill bound up. I was applying no pressure and let the pilot tip do the work. I immediately stopped and let the drill cool down so I didn't do further damage. I could see the smoke in my headlamp in the attic. Then, the moment the spade hit, it began to bog down and smoke came out the back in seconds. The drill tapped the spade pilot tip in just fine. I put on a 3/4" pilot-tipped spade bit and began drilling through a 2x4 top plate in my house use the 1 speed setting for control/safety. You can confirm that the return value of append() is None by assigning this value to a variable and printing it: > musical_notes = The last element is now "B" and the original list is now the modified version. You can see (below) that the original list was modified after appending the element. ![]() In our previous example: > musical_notes = ![]() Therefore, just by calling this method you are modifying the original list. It doesn't return a new copy of the list as we might intuitively think, it returns None. This method mutates (changes) the original list in memory. Then, using this variable we call the append() method, passing the element that we want to append (the string "B") as argument.First, the list is defined and assigned to a variable. This is an example of a call to append(): > musical_notes = □ Tip: The first element of the syntax (the list) is usually a variable that references a list. This element can be of any data type:īasically, any value that you can create in Python can be appended to a list. When we call a method, we use a dot after the list to indicate that we want to "modify" or "affect" that particular list.Īs you can see, the append() method only takes one argument, the element that you want to append. □ Tip: The dot is very important since append() is a method. This is the basic syntax that you need to use to call this method: □ Tip: To add a sequence of individual elements, you would need to use the extend() method. Here you can see the effect of append() graphically: With this method, you can add a single element to the end of a list. You will find examples of the use of append() applied to strings, integers, floats, booleans, lists, tuples, and dictionaries. How it can be equivalent to insert() and string slicing with the appropriate arguments. This is a powerful list method that you will definitely use in your Python projects. Hi!
